St. Augustine, The Oldest City in America and home to the most visited lighthouse in Florida.
The Spanish built a light tower in the mid-1500. Sir Frances Drake burned it and the town of St. Augustine to the ground. In 1763, the English built another light tower, with a cannon to alert the townspeople of approaching ships.
The Spanish reclaimed the area in 1784 until it became a territory of the United States 1821. The present 165 foot high lighthouse was opened for operation in 1874. The Junior Service League has done a marvelous job of restoring and rebuilding the Victorian 2 story keepers? house and the black and white tower.
Open to the public, the gift shop, museum, and lighthouse tours are a must see for everyone.
